HAWTHORNE BERRY: An herb (Crataegus laevigata). Hawthorne is a member of the family Rosaceae. It apparently causes a direct dilation of the smooth muscles of the coronary vessels which lowers their resistance and increasing blood flow. Hawthorne is also said to have a direct, favorable effect on the heart as well as increase nerve conductivity. HDL (high-density lipoprotein): Also known as "good" cholesterol, HDL's are large, dense, protein-fat particles that circulate in the blood picking up already used and unused cholesterol and taking them back to the liver as part of a recycling process. Higher levels of HDL's are associated with a lower risk of cardiovascular disease because the cholesterol is cleared more readily from the blood. HEMOGLOBIN: The iron containing protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen. HEMOLYTIC ANEMIA: Anemia caused by excessive destruction of red blood cells. HEPATITIS: An inflammatory condition of the liver. May be caused by a bacterial or viral infection, parasitic infestation, alcohol, drugs, toxins or transfusion of incompatible blood. Can be life-threatening. Severe hepatitis may lead to cirrhosis and chronic liver dysfunction. HERB: Natural remedies derived from whole plants as well as from plant roots, leaves, seeds, stems and other parts. Herbs are still the basis for Chinese medicine and are important constituents of many European natural remedies. HISTIDINE: An amino acid. Precursor to histamine, a vasodilator and gastric juice stimulant. Has been used as a therapeutic aid for arthritis. HIV: Human immune deficiency virus (also human immunodeficiency virus). A virus that infects T cells and leads to AIDS. HIV is a type D retrovirus that belongs to the lentivirus sub-family. HOMEOPATHY: A system of medicine that stresses the administration of very small doses of treatments that, when given to a healthy person, would produce symptoms of the disease. The system is based on the principal of "like cures like." HORMONE: A complex chemical compound produced in one part or organ of the body that initiates or regulates the activity of an organ or a group of cells in another part of the body. |
